How to add email accounts to the iPhone

This tutorial was put together on the iPhone 4 but should work for the 3G(s) models too.

Step 6

We are now at the key stages, setting up the email settings. You need to add the following details:

  • Name – This is what will appear in the “From” field in the email when you are sending emails.
  • Address – This is the email address you are going to be using (It is a good idea to copy and paste the domain part (example.com) of the address to save time later)
  • Password – The password for the email account you are using
  • Description – This is used to identify the email account on your iPhone should you have multiple accounts

Press “Next” in the top right hand corner of the screen to proceed to the next page.

Step 7

We are now setting up the type of mail account and server connections. Select the type of account you want to use. I personally go with IMAP but if you are only using the iPhone for this account then POP is just fine. You need to add the following:

Incoming Mail Server

  1. Host Name – In this case it is mail.your-domain-name.co.uk. This can be pop or pop3 in some case, please check with your email provider/web host company for the correct settings.
  2. User Name – Your email address for this account
  3. Password – The password for the email account

Outgoing Mail Server

  1. Host Name – In this case it is mail.your-domain-name.co.uk. This can be smtp in some case, please check with your email provider/web host company for the correct settings.
  2. User Name – Your email address for this account
  3. Password – The password for the email account

When this is all filled in proceed to the next step by clicking “Save” in the top right hand corner of the screen.

Step 8

The next step applies to accounts that are not secured using an SSL certificate. You will receive a pop up explaining that the server identity cannot be verified. Just click Continue.

Step 9

Once this has been done and all details are verified click “Save” again in the top right hand corner of the screen.

Step 10

On some occasions the iPhone will set the account up using SSL settings. In this case you will get errors when sending and/or receiving emails. If this is the case then you need to edit the settings.

Go to the settings, as in step one, and select the account you have just set up.

On the next screen select the “Account”, you may need to change 2 settings here so scroll down to “Outgoing Mail Server” and you will see “SMTP” and “Advanced”. Click SMTP first.

Click the “Primary Server” option and turn off SSL and set the “Server Port” to 143; once verified return to the Account page.

This is where I mentioned there maybe 2 settings to alter. You should be at the screen with the “Advanced” option. Select this and scroll down to the “Incoming Settings”, turn off SSL and click the “Account” button in the top left of the screen.

Now click “Done” in the top right of the screen, the iPhone will verify the settings, this may take a few seconds to complete. Once this is done you are all set and can navigate home and then to the Email client you are using.
